Climate Change Information Initiative

The threat of climate change is becoming more apparent each day. SSF Australia response to this issue has been to create our Climate Change Information Initiative. The objective of this program is to educate the wider community about the science of climate change, counter the confusion on the topic, and empowering individuals and their communities to reduce their carbon footprint. If you are interested in knowing more, or would like to get involved please contact us at climate@ssfaustralia.org

The Climate Change Information Initiative consists of the following:

Climate change public forums

SSF Australia members knowledgeable in climate change science, methods of reducing carbon emissions and the economics of the problem, hold public forums on the topics to educate communities. These forums are an informative and often entertaining method to convey the seriousness of the issue and possible solutions to an audience. Depending on the knowledge of the audience, the forums can range from discussing the causes of climate change, to ways in which individuals can reduce their carbon emissions as well as the broader economics impacts of climate change. The forums are an open environment that allows individuals the opportunity to ask questions about climate change and associated topics to better educate themselves.

Carbon auditing

Carbon auditing is quantifying an entities carbon footprint, for the purpose of reducing carbon emissions and enhancement of carbon sinks. SSF Australia assists the not-for-profit sector and local community groups in undertaking a limited carbon audit of their operations. This covers their day to day operations, use of utilities and work place practices. From this a detailed analysis determines areas in which carbon emissions can be reduced, as well as costs, through changes of practices and resources. In addition, possible carbon sink plans are presented, that offer a cheap method to allow the organization to become carbon neutral. This program is completely free of charge; with the audit process and final report completely confidential. Please note, this service is only available to not-for-profit organizations and local communities groups, SSF Australia does not audit corporations and individuals.

For an example of an audit, please view SSF Australia’s self carbon assessment.

Climate change information service

A large range of documentation is published regularly relating to climate change and likely impacts. These contain considerable scientific, engineering and economic information, which is often confusing for a non expert to understand. SSF Australia reviews many of these publications and provides short synopsis on the major points of each document. This information is also provided to our partner organization in the initiative, the Australian Conservation Society as part of its climate change program (www.acfonline.org.au). The purpose of this program is to provide a single quick access location for the public to find out information on climate change.
